By supporting The Governor’s School for the Arts, you will be investing in the next generation of artists, innovators and community leaders. In addition to producing a fine roster of performers, the School is also educating the next generation of audience members. The dedication required by students at The Governor’s School serves them the rest of their lives, whatever career path they choose.

The reasons for supporting the School are many:

  • Each year, over 15,000 people attend a Governor’s School performance.
  • Last Year, the 88 graduates from the school were awarded, in total, over $1.6 million in college scholarships.
  • In the seventeen-year history of the School, approximately $20 million in scholarships have been offered to our students to study at colleges and universities such as Juilliard School, Cornell University, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and the Eastman School of Music.

The Governor’s School for the Arts serves all of the eight cities and counties of South Hampton Roads and was one of the pioneers of regional cooperation. The school enrolls 345 students as follows:

  • Chesapeake 69
  • Franklin 3
  • Isle of Wight 24
  • Norfolk 48
  • Portsmouth 21
  • Southampton County 7
  • Suffolk 21
  • Virginia Beach 152

A number of our students do not have the financial resources to be able to afford any private arts instruction, much less the professional level of instruction they receive at the Governor's School. All students receive individual arts instruction at no charge.
