Instrumental Music Auditions |

Applicants should prepare two short selections of music which demonstrate the highest level of technical facility, musical proficiency, and expressive capability. Applicants may be asked to play one, both, or parts of their selections. Prepared pieces must include contrasting styles such as baroque, classical, romantic, contemporary, or jazz. Two copies of each selection should be brought for use of the adjudicators. Memorization is not required for the audition. Piano accompaniment is not required; however, some instrumental students may find it desirable. Applicants must arrange for their own accompanists. Pre-recorded accompaniment is permitted, but students must provide their own battery-powered tape or CD player. Jazz applicants may be asked to demonstrate improvisational skills. |

Additional guidelines for individual areas: |

KEYBOARD (Piano) |
Applicants May be asked to play ascending and descending scales, arpeggios and chords. |
STRING, BRASS, WOODWIND, AND GUITAR |
Applicants may be asked to play ascending and descending major scales. Wind and brass players may also be asked to play the chromatic scale. Guitarists may be asked to play chords. Electric guitarists MUST bring cords and amplifiers. |
SYNTHESIZER/RECORDING TECHNIQUES |
Applicants must demonstrate some keyboard proficiency. Applicants will be interviewed for knowledge and suitability to work with highly specialized electronic musical equipment. |
PERCUSSION (Snare drum, mallets, trap set) |
Applicants must demonstrate basic drumming rudiments. Applicants must bring a snare drum and stand. Applicants should be prepared to perform on all the instruments listed at left and to play styles on the drum set (i.e. Swing, Latin, Jazz, etc.) |
INSTRUMENTAL JAZZ |
Applicants must show proficiency on an instrument, the ability to improvise by reading from a lead sheet, and may be asked to play a prepared jazz solo and ascending and descending scales. |
COMPOSITION |
Applicants must bring scores of two original compositions, preferably in contrasting styles. Students are encouraged to bring recording(s) of their work, but they must provide their own battery-powered tape or CD player. |
